Description

Paul Ryan, a favourite vocalist of the late jazz critic Jack Mazzarik, has performed regularly in a number of London’s major venues including Ronnie Scott’s, the Crazy Coqs, Pizza Express Jazz Club, the Pheasantry and the Hippodrome Casino. He specialises in the Great American Songbook drawing on his vast repertoire to feature songs by Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Jimmy Van Heusen, Rodgers and Hart, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, the Gershwins and many lesser-known names. His singing style evokes the golden age of the great crooners such as Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. But his voice is very much his own and his impeccable phrasing and sensitive reading of a lyric are matched by his keen humour and a fine way with revealing anecdotes and stories behind the songs. He has a parallel career as a writer with particular emphasis on French culture and among those he has interviewed in print and in public have been such major figures as Yves Montand, Jeanne Moreau, Catherine Deneuve, Michel Legrand and Jane Birkin. That aspect of his work has been recognised by the French Government which has awarded him the Order of Arts and Letters. Not surprisingly, he also sings (in French and English) songs by such acclaimed Gallic songwriters as Charles Trenet, Jacques Prevert and Charles Aznavour.

“Ryan sings with a knowledge and understanding of the nuances and wit of the great lyricists…each song a narrative…personal and poignant, opening up a thousand memories.” – Matthew Wright, Jazzwise.
