Description
Most writers draw on lived experience for material - especially in comedy where life’s lemons are converted into horrid, sticky laughter-lemonade. Often this results in sweet, deliciously poignant and top-tier writing - and at other times it blows up in your face and makes your actual life worse. Siân has ballsed this up before so you don’t have to, and created a toolkit to help delve into the darkest areas without re-traumatising yourself and everyone around you.
This workshop is aimed at writers in all mediums - comedy, fiction, scripts, poetry, theatre and more - who use personal experiences in their work, and are interested in exploring how to do this in more informed, effective, and ultimately more fun ways. Siân has developed these tools through nearly a decade of putting material from her personal life in front of people, and devised a workshop based on exactly what she would have liked to have been told when she started. By the end of the session you should feel better equipped to:
- Creatively approach autobiographical writing from new angles so that you’re controlling it, rather than it controlling you.
- Hyper-fictionalise autobiographical events to then work back to the juicy starting point (or not!)
- Discern what is ready to develop into work for performance or publishing.
- Manage consent from others if they appear in your work, while not bending to self-censorship.
- Create your own checklists for how to write fearlessly while taking good long-term care of yourself.
Writing autobiographically is transformative and important - but it should also be playful and fun. This session puts you back in the driving seat so you can confidently launch into more ambitious, engaging and exciting writing projects.
Workshops are 2-4pm on Saturday afternoons with maximum 25 participants so everyone gets a chance to take part in the interactive sections. There is no minimum or maximum level of writing experience for this workshop - the more range and diversity in the room, the better! Any questions please don’t hesitate to email: omnisianbles@gmail.com
Fee £20 - or Early Bird bookings before the end of September £15.
Siân is a BBC New Comedy Award- nominated stand-up comic, writer and weirdo. She has taken two critically-acclaimed solo stand-up shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (★★★★ “Joy and bewilderment in equal measure” - The Skinny; featured in The Telegraph’s Funniest One-Liners of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017), and three alternative comedy sketch shows with Zoë Tomalin (“unalloyed joy … full of impish verve” - Chortle.) Siân’s absurdist dark comedy short film script “Swan” was recently produced by The Uncertain Kingdom starring Game of Thrones’ Mark Addy and The Office’s Sally Bretton. Siân recently lectured on absurdism and political comedy at Slade School of Contemporary Art, and is a Creative Fellow of Exeter University where she is researching “The Politics of Sexual Nature” with the Department of Arts & Culture.
