Led by artist Claire Shoosmith at Eastbourne Studio Pottery, DC2 Artist Studios & Makerspaces, 137-139 Seaside Road, Eastbourne BN21 3PG.
FREE but booking essential. **Wear old clothes and bring an apron if you have one**
The workshops will take as their starting point ideas about the origins of life, particularly a theory that chemist Graham Cairns-Smith put forward in 1966 that the origins of life may have started with clay crystals. These ideas will act as an anchor point from which to explore ideas about change and evolution, particularly the speed of change in our modern world.
SATURDAY 3rd FEBRUARY, Session 1 (10am – 12 noon): Using experimental processes including dripping clay slip (a liquified clay) to grow abstract objects through gradual precipitation, referencing the passage of time and the growth of geological formations such as stalagmites and stalactites.
The workshops will be for a maximum of 10 participants in each session, with each participant taking part in at least two sessions. A final one hour session with everyone coming together as a larger group will be arranged to provide an opportunity for all participants and their invited guests to view a display of the objects made and to handle and discuss the objects, techniques, processes and themes of the project.
Eastbourne Studio Pottery is an inspirational and welcoming centre for the study and practice of ceramic art and craft, based in the Devonshire Collective's DC2 Makerspace dedicated to providing opportunities for all members of the community to explore their creativity, share their facilities and play with clay.
Claire Shoosmith is a Director of Eastbourne Studio Pottery. Claire has a degree in Sculpture from Central St. Martins and an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art. She works across many mediums to create her work and uses clay in an experimental way exploring the alchemy and happy accidents of the material. She runs workshops for all age groups at Eastbourne Studio Pottery and has recently completely a Heritage Lottery Funded school project looking at life in the Bronze Age.
The Experimental Clay Workshops are FREE thanks to support from the Big Lottery through Arts Council England, East Sussex Arts Partnership and Devonshire West Big Local.
