Description

Tickets now available for Nicer Tuesdays October!

Taking place on 29 October at Oval Space this month, like clockwork, is Nicer Tuesdays. Our monthly evening of talks to keep you inspired and informed about all the goings-on in the creative world, Nicer Tuesdays October is shaping up to do exactly that. Promising to be an absolute belter of an event, this month features speakers from the worlds of graphic design, exhibition design, photography and film.

Doors open at 6:30 pm and you can grab your ticket using the link below. Once you’ve done that, here’s a bit more information about DixonBaxi, Enda Bowe, Meji Alabi and Joana Filipe and James Mason for your perusal.

DixonBaxi
DixonBaxi is London-based branding and creative agency founded by Simon Dixon and Aporva Baxi in 2002. Over the years, the studio has made a name for itself creating big and bold work for the likes of Channel 4, Netflix and the Premier League. This September, it was announced that the studio had undertaken more football-related work, this time for Italian club AC Milan in the form of a new visual identity.

Inspired by the club’s 100-year-rich heritage, the team at DixonBaxi has developed an identity based around the distinctive oval shaped crest to symbolise the club’s 450 million global supporters. At Nicer Tuesdays this October, Simon and Aporva will be taking to the stage to discuss how they approached such a daunting project which also included creating a bespoke typeface for the club.

Enda Bowe
Enda Bowe is an Irish photographer based in London who keeps storytelling at the heart of every project. Using a camera, he enters the worlds of others, using the medium as a means to get to know people, and tell their story. A documentary photographer, he was recently shortlisted for the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize for the second year in a row.

Enda will be joining us at Nicer Tuesdays to talk about the series his shortlist nomination is taken from. Titled Love’s Fire Song, Enda photographed youth culture on either side of the peace walls in Belfast, choosing the symbolic bonfires of 12 July and 8 August as his starting point.

Meji Alabi
Meji Alabi is the name behind some of the biggest and most memorable music videos out there. Skepta, Wizkid, Davido, Goldlink, Popcaan and Nasty C are just some of the names that the London-born, Texas-raised, Nigerian filmmaker has collaborated with over the past few years.

At this month’s event, Meji will be chatting through his portfolio, focussing on one of his most recent works: a collaboration with Afrobeat superstar Tiwa Savage on her latest song, 49-99. The project is “universally Black and unapologetically African”; shot in Lagos, it features and was shot by almost exclusively locals.

Joana Filipe and James Mason
Finally, Joana Filipe and James Mason complete October’s line up. The duo comes from Joana Filipe Design Studio and InterestingProjects respectively but teamed up to design Tate Liverpool’s Keith Haring exhibition. Over several months, they worked with curators at the institution to bring the work of the much-loved artist to life.

The pair will be talking through how they immersed themselves in photos, music, films and documentaries about 1980s New York to design an exhibit across 600 square metres. The result takes visitors inside the mind of Keith Haring, profiling his interest in underground club and street culture, and his vision that art should be made accessible to as many people as possible.

Timings for the evening: doors open at 6.30pm and the talks will begin at 7.15pm. Oval Space will be serving delicious food throughout the evening with the venue open until 10pm and we'll have drinks kindly provided by Camden Town Brewery.
