Another month, another Nicer Tuesdays! Falling this July on the 30th, once again we’ve curated a line-up of exciting and wide-ranging creative talks which will take place in east London’s Oval Space. This month we’ll be hearing from illustration and animation duo Cabeza Patata, photographer Alice Mann, filmmaker Deepa Keshvala and creative agency Lovers.
Get your tickets now or continue reading to find out a bit more about each speaker.
Cabeza Patata is an illustration and animation duo formed of Katie Menzies and Abel Reverter, who split their time between London and Barcelona. The duo’s work, which features a set of distinctive characters produced in three dimensions, has been popping up everywhere, from the pages of The New York Times to the homepage of Apple’s App Store. This Nicer Tuesdays, Katie and Abel will be talking through their recent work for Spotify, which visualises our ever-changing moods and the ability of music to help shape and change our feelings. They’ll also explain how they developed a series of characters devoid of gender, race or age.
Born in Cape Town and now based in London, Alice Mann is a photographer whose work, in her own words, “explore[s] notions of picture making as an act of collaboration”. In each of her series, whether she’s documenting one girl as she completes her final year of high school or the Sunday best of London’s Church-going African diaspora, Alice engages with her subjects over extended periods of time, enabling her to create nuanced representations. Alice will be joining us to talk through her joyous series Drummies which late last year won her the illustrious Taylor Wessing Portrait prize – the first time in its history that the £15,000 award went to a series of images.
Deepa Keshvala is a director of photography and filmmaker based in London who has worked with everyone from Flohio to Gucci, Jorja Smith to Stella McCartney. Her work is multifaceted and often incredibly technical, seeing her work with directors to bring their ideas to life. For her Nicer Tuesdays talk, however, Deepa will be talking through some of her personal work – in particular, a short film about her father – and her process for producing a film from idea to completion.
Lovers is a creative agency that started as a handful of creatives, designers, writers and art directors, and has now developed into a few-dozen-strong collective spanning London and New York. Largely working in the advertising space for clients such as Alexandra Palace, Dishoom, BFI and Greenpeace, the agency’s founder Alex Ostrowski will be joining us to share not only some recent work, but the story behind Lovers’ inception and unique “Collective Creative Power” model.
Timings for the evening: doors open at 6.30pm and the talks will begin at 7.15pm. Oval Space will be serving delicious food throughout the evening with the venue open until 10pm and we'll have drinks kindly provided by Camden Town Brewery.
