Description

Tickets are now available for Nicer Tuesdays April!

We are excited to announce the line-up for Nicer Tuesdays April which will be taking place, as ever, on the last Tuesday of the month – 30 April. It’s not one to be missed as we’ll be hearing from typographers Dinamo, art director and publisher Ben Ditto, painter Alice Tye, and director of photography Rina Yang.

Flying over from the continent to join us in east London this month is Dinamo, a type design agency with bases in Berlin and Basel. Founded by Johannes Breyer and Fabian Harb, the studio has garnered a reputation as the go-to guys for all things variable and has worked with clients including Tumblr, Warp Records and Nike.

In a month’s time, Johannes and Fabian will be taking us through the creation of their type design tool Dinamo Dark Room, a tool to expose the design flaws of a variable font through testing its technical properties. They will also be touching on the various iterations of one of their most recent fonts, Whyte.

Earlier this year, London-based painter Alice Tye exhibited a series of paintings at Mother’s Redchurch Street offices. Titled Mono No Aware the series features beautiful moments captured on a trip to Japan, including everything from cherry blossom to neon signs to the less recognisably-Japanese and mundane scenes like a cyclist crossing the road, or the sun beginning to set over a hill. In her talk at Nicer Tuesdays April, Alice will be talking through her experience of exploring the country, and translating that experience into paint on a canvas.

A Graduate back in 2013 when she completed her studies at Camberwell College of Arts, Alice has gone on to produce commissioned pieces for The Gourmand, The Guardian Literary Review, and AirBnB alongside a plethora of personal works.

Ben Ditto is the creative mind behind Ditto, a publishing house and printer based in east London covering subculture and fashion, which he founded in 2009. Over the years, Ditto has released myriad publications, all which reflect Ben’s strong and specific interest and aesthetics. Alongside this work, Ben runs Future Artefacts a project that explores the role of physical media in today’s society.

Towards the end of last year, Dazed Media announced the launch of a new platform, Dazed Beauty, a community platform dedicated to “redefining the language and communication of beauty”. Since then, Dazed Beauty has solidified a unique aesthetic and approach to representing this world, including releasing a printed manifestation that saw Kylie Jenner, Kate Moss and Travis Scott (as centaurs) and among its cover stars. At Nicer Tuesdays April, Ben will be talking through his involvement in the project as art director and creative consultant.

Having grown up in a small town in Japan where she studied still life and portrait painting, Rina Yang is now based in London where she works as a cinematographer and director of photography. Rina’s portfolio is impressive to say the least, boasting a line-up of music videos, narrative films and commercial work, all finished in a slick, signature style.

Rina will be taking to the stage to discuss her role in the world of film, as well as giving insight into some of her favourite projects work with artists like Skepta, Kamasi Washington, Björk and Rihanna as well as with brands like Nike, Rimowa, and Channel 4.

Timings for the evening: doors open at 6.30pm and the talks will begin at 7.15pm. Oval Space will be serving delicious food throughout the evening with the venue open until 10pm and we'll have drinks kindly provided by Camden Town Brewery.
