NEW DEAL STRING BAND
The New Deal String Band are a legendary outfit playing American Old Time folk comprising of Tom Paley, Joe Locker and Tom’s son Ben.
Paley, now 87, is a revered figure from the American Folk scene; from early performances with Woody Guthrie through to collaborations with Peggy Seeger, he is best known for forming ‘The New Lost City Ramblers’; cited as a major influence by Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead.
Joe Locker developed his skills at the famed Washington Square Park Sunday sessions in Greenwich Village. In the 1990s Tom’s son Ben took up the fiddler’s slot, and is a renowned red-hot traditional fiddle player in his own right.
This is a rare chance to catch one of American Music’s most influential and important musicians playing live in Folkestone.
GANGA THAPA
Ganga Thapa is a dynamic Nepalese musician based in London. He is constantly creating and pushing the boundaries of Nepalese traditional music by collaboration and invention, which have led to a Nepalese fusion project.
There are familiar strains of Nepalese music but Ganga brings it up to date with modern stylings and quite brilliant twists and unexpected influences.
He is in great demand having played at many of Europe’s most prestigious music festivals so it’s a great pleasure to have him on this world-beating bill of folk music at Strange Cargo’s new location at The Factory in Cheriton.
