This lecture explores Gothic romance within the movement Sheri-Marie Harrison terms “New Black Gothic,” focusing on Black women’s horror and Gothic storytelling. Drawing on Afrogothic theory and films from Black Girl to Nanny and Atlantics, it examines how intimacy with ghosts becomes a strategy of survival for the diaspora. These works reveal a Gothic mode that signals horror while articulating a romance oriented toward futurity rather than loss.
