Description

Presented by Tugce Kutlu

This presentation explores horror’s deep connection to grief, rooted in the genre’s proximity to death, and argues that 21st-century horror films are fundamentally about the process of mourning. Through a case study approach, it examines prominent films like Midsommar (Ari Aster, 2019), Hereditary (Ari Aster, 2018), Pet Sematary (Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, 2019), The Woman in Black (James Watkins, 2012), and The Babadook (Jennifer Kent, 2014).

Using genre theory and grief studies, the research is structured around Kübler-Ross’s “five stages of grief” to offer a fresh perspective on these films’ narrative and visual engagements with loss. By rethinking the horror genre as more than a vehicle for fear, this dissertation highlights its potential as a cinematic tool to represent the emotional and psychological consequences of death. Building on grief scholarship and redefining genre studies, the research underscores how horror provides a visceral, empathetic exploration of mourning in contemporary cinema.
