Description

A shared passion for the music of Brazil unites Mishka Adams and her cohorts, from old school samba to the great songwriters.. In contrast, pianist John-Paul Muir’s premieres his impressionistic suite, Cornerstones .

Mishka Adams' Urubu
Will Bartlett - Piano
JonCox - Bass
Pat Davey - Drums

This project came about from their shared passion for Brazilian music. Urubu will be presenting all kinds of songs from all over Brazil, from rootsy old school sambas to baiao and xote from the north east as well as more modern choices from the likes of Jobim, Chico Buarque and Joyce - hidden gems and reworkings of old classics.

Mishka Adams
Since moving to London in 2006, Filipina/British singer Mishka Adams has released 4 albums with British jazz label Candid Records, graduated with a Masters in Jazz Vocals from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and built a solid name for herself as a singer and percussionist on the London Jazz and Samba scenes. She has toured the UK extensively and performed on stages such as Pizza Express Jazz Club, The Royal Albert Hall, The Vortex (where she ran a monthly residency for two years running), The Barbican and 606 Jazz Club among others.
She plays a mixture of music from all over Brasil as well as her own soulful, lyrical originals and is always collaborating with musicians from different musical backgrounds - most recently she released an album with renowned educator, musician, composer and arranger Pete Churchill - an album called Stories to Tell. The album features compositions written by Pete Churchill and performed by a remarkable band: Mishka Adams on lead vocals, Pete Churchill on piano and vocals, Mark Lockheart on saxophone, Adriano Adewale on percussion, and Ben Barritt on guitar and vocals.
In the pipeline is a new project with Guillermo Rozenthuler called Amizade, presenting songs from all over South America and also featuring Javier Fioramonti and Adriano Adewale, as well as a project of reworkings of classical pieces with Alisdair Hogarth of the Prince Consort on piano. Albums are planned for recording in late 2017.

John-Paul Muir

New Zealand pianist John-Paul Muir premieres the Cornerstone Suite, a new project featuring a set of compositions and improvisations both intimate and powerful in scope that draw on a wide range of influences from French impressionism to contemporary jazz.
