Description
Congleton Choral Society will perform Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's dramatic oratorio Elijah under the direction of its Music Director, Tom Newall, supported by professional orchestra and soloists.
Drought, famine, fire, flood, earthquake and a whirlwind, with a fiery chariot drawn by fiery horses; all are dramatized in this mighty oratorio, with some beautiful lyrical passages of music in between.
This work was commissioned by the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival and received its world premiere in 1846 in Birmingham Town Hall in a performance conducted by the composer. The original German text was written by Mendelssohn, and translated into English by William Bartholomew, a chemist but also an experienced amateur poet and composer.
This performance will be in English.
