Description
On the Saturday of Valentine’s weekend, Bompas & Parr’s Alcoholic Architecture presents a stone-carving workshop of the demonstrative variety, in the courtyard of Southwark Cathedral. There will be no stony faces this Valentine’s, as you present your paramour with the most permanent gift around.
Be warned: this monumental, Medieval masonry is a weighty affair and you may want to book a taxi home – the 300mm by 210mm stones weigh over 5kg so are a little heavy for a handbag.
The workshop will take place in the gardens of London’s oldest Gothic cathedral. Southwark Cathedral is not just a Cathedral of abbots, kings and politicians but of ordinary people, including actors and writers, brewers and merchants, soldiers and servants. And on the afternoon of Saturday 13th February it’ll become the site of an amorous stone masonry epic, where a group of 15 masonry neophytes bond over the great art of stone carving.
MODERN MEGALITHS
Guests will get to design their very own modern megalith, handling the same traditional craft tools used in Medieval times. Each budding mason will be able to create their own individual stone (for personal display or Valentine’s gifting) with an inscription or design of their choice: your names intertwined, your faces amalgamated, a verse of loving decree…
In this four hour workshop guests will work under master carver, Neil Luxton, Highgate Cemetery’s head stonemason, the man who has carved both Patrick Caulfield's and Malcolm McLaren’s gravestones.
Do take time to consider what you might want to carve and bring any references!
BEYOND THE STONE
The best carver will win a bespoke cat o’ nine tails.
The activity will happen under the watchful eye of Southwark Cathedral’s own stone gargoyles and will be accompanied by a dark and rousing playlist of the classical pieces that influenced heavy metal (due to restrictions on playing actual heavy metal).
You’ll have 30 minutes to venture into the depths of Borough Market for lunch. After the carving session, everyone will go over to Alcoholic Architecture for the 4 – 5pm session, to enjoy the breathable gin cloud and a cocktail based on brews originally made by the monks who once brewed voraciously on this very site.
Tickets £75 each. Include session at Alcoholic Architecture with cocktail.
