Join us for a natural Mark Making workshop with Ross Belton using homemade natural inks and your own handmade experimental brushes.
Ross will demonstrate how to create natural inks, and then we’ll make our own experimental brushes, before undertaking a series of mark making exercises.
Mark making refers to the different lines, patterns and textures we create in art. They are the building blocks we use to express our creativity, whether painting, drawing or preparing for work for print.
As artists, it’s so easy to fall into our ‘comfort zones’, producing work that doesn’t challenge or stretch us. Using homemade brushes frees us from traditional ways of drawing and creates tools that can produce random and unexpected results.
The workshop includes all materials and you will take away your own handmade brushes, a factsheet and a small bottle of natural ink to continue on your own.
Please wear suitable clothing, which you do not mind getting messy in or bring an apron. This is not messy workshop but accidents do happen.
Ross’s artistic practice is rooted in experimentation with natural processes and the idea of place. Sustainability and using local resources are key in trying to minimise his artistic footprint, whilst still engaging the viewer with works of undiscovered or transient beauty.
Found objects and discarded tools, recycled materials, vintage linens and sea salvage all lead Ross in different directions. Natural dyes, rusting metal and more recently homegrown plants feed into his slow unpredictable adventure in art, helping us to see things in a different way.
The workshop will take place at R.A.W Lab (London, UK). R.A.W. Lab is just a 5-minute walk from Gallions Reach DLR station.
NSN Magazine is a quarterly publication dedicated to exploring how environmental activism, crafts, design and business intersect in contemporary society. Each month, we will have expert speakers give a talk, and then there will be a Q&A and further opportunities to network and promote your eco-friendly creative business online to our social media following.
