Description
In March STORE will be running a twice weekly after-school club at Coal Drops Yard in Kings Cross.
The after-school club will be run for students from local schools between the ages of 15-18 who have an interest in architecture, design or art, and who might be considering higher education in related subjects.
The course will be run with monthly themes that will conclude with a design object which will consequently be sold within the STORE shop. A royalties scheme will allow students to decide whether they keep a share of the income from objects sold or whether to give it to their respective art and design departments.
The After School Club this month will be run by product designers Kevin Smeeing and Stine Keinicke in collaboration with glass maker Jochen Holz.
March’s After School Club will introduce students to various production methods of glass, they will explore and develop 2D patterns which will then be incorporated into the final product. A selection of patterns will be transferred onto a range of one-off drinking glasses and jugs, using Jochen Holz’s glass making techniques. Jochen Holz specialises in a lampworking technique, and will use the patterns designed by the students to transform prefabricated glass tubes into exquisite glassware. The glasses and jugs will be sold in Store Store, with royalties going to the students.
The students will visit Jochen Holz workshop in East London twice during the program. Once at the beginning of the program to see him working with the lampworking technique and once in the end of the program where the patterns the students have designed will be used for the final production of the glasses. All of the other classes will take place in STORE STORE, where we will be looking into existing environmental patterns and the world of glass. Students will develop patterns, using various methods and materials. After freely sketching, drawing, collaging or patchworking patterns, we will work towards patterns which can be engraved in graphite or laser cut in steel sheets. These final patterns can then be used by Jochen to emboss the glasses, to make a unique tactile texture on the final product.
This will be an excellent opportunity for students to go through some exciting design processes with leading architects and designers within their respective fields, and a chance for students to build up their portfolios as they begin to think about university or a career in a creative subject.
Each month there will be an opportunity for 10 students to be part of the after school club.
The course is increasingly competitive and we will be accepting students based on their applications. There is a charge of £20 for the 8 after-school classes each month. To secure a place the fee has to be payed before attending the first lesson, for payment please find
Each class will run for 2.5hrs between 5-7.30pm every Tuesday and Thursday, all materials will be provided.
As part part of the twice weekly course we will hold a mid-term crit, where we will invite a number of guest critics from local Universities to whom the students will present their work.
