Under various guises, both solo and as frontwoman of the acclaimed ‘6 Day Riot’, Tamara Schlesinger has enjoyed chart success, extensively toured the UK and North America, achieved acclaim from major press, synced her music to domestic TV shows (Skins) and even Hollywood films and trailers (Scream 4, 127 Hours). Her credentials as an accomplished musician are in no doubt, as she presents her latest incarnation as ‘MALKA’ – with a new album released 1st June 2015 through her own ‘Tantrum Records’.

Schlesinger is continually evolving as an artist, pushing herself musically and thriving amongst personal confines. The song-led ‘electro-alt-pop’ of MALKA, is a step away from her earlier - more guitar and acoustic based works, offering an expansive, ‘deep pop’ sound. Songwriting and electro- rhythmical drum beats are characteristics which permeate the dark fuzzy corners of this digitally crafted album.

Formerly writing and transforming songs from demos with a live band, recording under a new moniker gave MALKA complete studio freedom to apply her own ideas and production techniques - playing all instruments herself. Tamara has always delighted in subverting her own distinctive offering and the album is imbued with her steadfast originality that’s earned enduring success in the music industry.

Previously finding inspiration from social commentary, politics and literature, ‘Marching to Another Beat’ is an intimate projection of MALKA’s current outlook; "This album is really an honest account of where I am right now, a crossroads where playful and youthful exuberance meets with some maturity and a sense of exploring my place in life".

Lead track ‘Into the Night’ gives centre stage to an epicurean chorus and verses laced with lyrics of insomnia and night terrors, underpinned with a driven bassline to provide an eminently danceable, rich pop groove. Recent single ‘Let it Go' shows MALKA’s lively side with a coltish arrangement, buzzing synths and a cappella breakdowns, it’s Tamara at her most engaging and infectious. ‘Jumpin’ the Line’, with its clicks, clinks and claps and precise layering is an enthralling listen and ‘Wrong Side of this Town’ is another example of opulent layers and steely bass leading the charge.

Schlesinger was never likely to be content with just having the one idea as a musician. Her career began with a solo album; 2004’s ‘From Home To Home’, before evolving into the exuberant carnival that was 6 Day Riot. Two solo albums on and MALKA is something altogether new and surprising – although, by this point in Schlesinger’s career, that shouldn’t be surprising at all.
