    Description

We have a lot to thank monks for. Amid their austere way of life and the rigours of piety, poverty and hardship, monks have made an incalculable contribution to our collective cultural identity through their expertise in making beer and botanical spirits.

Through the ideals of self-sufficiency, monks made their own cheese, bread, wine and beer for their own consumption and sold any surplus to travellers and pilgrims. On the back of this, the Trappist beer tradition grew strong. Later, monasteries would produce botanical liqueurs: monks were prodigious gardeners – partly a reflection of their historic role as medics.

Bompas & Parr now celebrate that industriousness – and one of the world’s oldest and finest French liqueurs – with a Chartreuse Masterclass. On Wednesday 20th April at 6pm, up to 20 guests can gather at Alcoholic Architecture, Bompas & Parr’s bar in Borough Market.

Chartreuse brand ambassador Nick Caputo will lead the group through a talk and tasting around the Carthusian order of monks and their treasured ‘Elixir of Life’ – a recipe first gifted to the monks in 1605 by Maréchal d’Estrées on a manuscript, before being refined by the order in the mid-1770s.

    The Masterclass includes:

A welcome Cocktail showcasing the finest of monastic drinks: a Carthusian Cassis liqueur with Champagne

A welcome Peaches in Chartreuse jelly as served for the first class menu on the Titanic

An aromatic herb garden centerpiece featuring a selection of the herbs, plants and flowers typical to monastic gardens and those used in the creation of Chartreuse.

A minted Chartreuse swizzle cocktail from our new spring menu to sip while Chartreuse brand ambassador Nick Caputo gives a fascinating talk on the history, ingredients and production of this remarkable liqueur - a recipe first gifted to the monks in 1605 by Maréchal d’Estrées on a manuscript, before being refined by the order in the mid-1770s.

To finish, a Nuclear Pina Colada cocktail (rum, Chartreuse, pineapple and coconut) which you can take into our special Nuclear Strawberry Daiquiri Cloud (strawberry, rum, Chartreuse and lime) for a once in a lifetime ‘Miami Vice’ cloud and drink experience.

Each guest will receive a miniature bottle of Green & Yellow Chartreuse to take home.

Tickets are priced at £25 each and include bar entry and one hour masterclass.
