London Summer School 2019

Event ended

London Summer School 2019

From GBP 500.00

Description

STORE Summer Schools are collaborative two week workshops in architecture, art and design. Each year, we bring students together on experimental design and construction projects to create large scale installations and ambitious public performances. For the past six summers, our London school has seen students transform a active urban sites through ambitious architectural installations and events.

PLEASE NOTE: VENUE CHANGE

As our usual Gillett Square site will be under construction this summer, we will use this fallow period to explore new pastures in Kings Cross. Working in collaboration with Global Generation’s Story Garden, and in dialogue with local community groups, we will create a flexible set of architectural interventions which, individually, provide planting, rainwater harvesting, shelter and seating for the community garden, but come together to create the infrastructure for a communal feast. For full details of this year's brief, please download the full pdf.

Each of our courses is led by experienced architects, artists and designers teaching at leading universities, and all are dedicated to helping students realise their unique design vision. Our breadth of expertise allows us to offer diverse courses which consider urbanism, performance and craft.

Students will be part of a diverse, energetic and creative group, guided by our tutors through a hands-on, often playful design process driven by physical prototyping and testing. Through working together on an ambitious group build, students will develop the confidence to lead and enjoy working with others. Regular design critiques, photography and portfolio tutorials will provide valuable opportunities for critical reflection on their work both as a team and as individuals. It is our intention that students should leave the Summer School with the capacity to independently initiate and develop socially engaged design projects.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This course is open to students aged 15 and over and with varying levels of experience. It will be of particular benefit to students interested in studying art, architecture or design at university level but also those currently enrolled in further education. Equally the course will provide an introduction to ambitious beginners with no design background.

STORE’s ethos of design through making ensures accessibility to those without extensive experience. Each and every student will be challenged imaginatively and creatively by set themes and by the scale of activities undertaken.

General arrangements

The school will run from 9:00am to 5:30pm each day from Monday to Friday, with an optional portfolio tutorial on Saturday 28th July and an evening event TBC on the final Saturday 3rd August. Students are expected to provide their own lunch.

"The summer course is an incredible opportunity to learn design, build amazing structures and work in a group. I would recommend this to anyone, even those who do not study architecture."

- Julia, Former Student.
