Description

STORE Summer Schools are collaborative two week workshops in architecture, art and design. Each year, we bring students together on experimental design and construction projects to create large scale installations and ambitious public performances.

For the fourth consecutive summer, Dalston’s Gillett Square will be the site, classroom and workshop for our London Summer School. Through material testing and immediate engagement with an active urban site, we will explore architecture, art practice and performance to understand the dynamics of public space while developing the skills to intervene effectively, creatively and sustainably. The School culminates each year in a celebratory final show, which each year draws a diverse public to interact with student’s creations.

Each of our courses is led by experienced architects, artists and designers teaching at leading universities, All are dedicated to helping students realise their unique design vision, while our breadth of expertise allows us to offer diverse courses which consider urbanism, performance and craft.

Students will be part of a diverse, energetic and creative group, guided by our tutors through a hands-on, often playful design process driven by physical prototyping and testing. Through working together on an ambitious group build, students will develop the confidence to lead and enjoy working with others. Regular design critiques, photography and portfolio tutorials will provide valuable opportunities for critical reflection on their work both as a team and as individuals. It is our intention that students should leave the Summer School with the capacity to independently initiate and develop socially engaged design projects.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This course is open to students of all ages and with varying levels of experience. It will be of particular benefit to students interested in studying art, architecture or design at university level but also those currently enrolled in further education. Equally the course will provide an introduction to ambitious beginners with no design background.

STORE’s ethos of design through making ensures accessibility to those without extensive experience. Each and every student will be challenged imaginatively and creatively by set themes and by the scale of activities undertaken.

"The summer course is an incredible opportunity to learn design, build amazing structures and work in a group. I would recommend this to anyone, even those who do not study architecture."
