London Design Festival SPECIAL: After Work Club: The Colour of Hair Workshop

Sep 17 2019 18:30 - 21:00

Store Store, 118 Lower Stable Street, N1C 4DR London

As a part of London Design Festival, STORE STORE presents a series of After Work Clubs.

‘The Colour of Hair’ workshop is run by Fabio Hendry from Studio ilio. During the workshop participants will learn the basics of ‘The Colour of Hair’ printing technique, an innovative process that Fabio Hendry has developed alongside with Martijn Rigters. The participants will apply the printing technique, which transforms human hair into a printing medium, to various display plates and tiles made from aluminium. The printing process is based on the hair's main protein, keratin, to be liquefied and carbonised by the use of heat. ‘The Colour of Hair’ project looks at using hair as an abundant, natural and sustainable material which can be locally sourced and printed.

Fabio Hendry is a designer whose work seeks to explore new potentials for overlooked matter, from architectural systems to materials. Hendry is interested in exploring disruptive approaches to industrial manufacturing, revealing alternative systems of production. He believes design and ecology should be a combined practice and that an emphasis on materiality enables us to rethink the building blocks of our environment. In 2015, he founded Studio ilio, a London based design agency fostering material innovation and experimental engineering. Alongside this, he is a visiting lecturer at the Design Department at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, and curator of Stalla Libra - Art Space, currently a public playspace in Sedrun, Switzerland.

The workshop is open to a maximum of 10 participants (age 16+) on a first come, first served basis. Attendance at the workshop costs £40 (£30 students) with all proceeds supporting the STORE's After school club for local state school students.
