    Description

The Igbo Studies Initiative, in association with the Centre for African Studies, SOAS, University of London as well as Manchester Metropolitan University present

Legacies of Biafra: Reflections on the Nigerian Civil War 50 years on

The ‘Legacies of Biafra’ conference seeks to explore the on-going impact of the war locally and globally, considering how the first civil war in independent Africa has influenced the perception of the continent internationally as well as its impact on the political and social structures within Nigeria. As 2017 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the outbreak of war, this conference will provide a timely reflection on the war as a watershed moment in contemporary African history.

At this year’s two day conference we have a range of speakers participating from the world of academia, activism, politics and the arts. Visit http://www.igboconference.com/2017-conference-schedule/ for details of our programme.

    • Phillip Effiong Jnr (Son of the the last president of Biafra Phillip Effiong)
    • Obi Okigbo (Daughter of the late Christopher Okigbo)
    • Jonathon Aitken (BBC Biafra war corespondent)
    • Oby Ezekwesili (Former minister of Education)
    • Charles Oputa (Charlyboy)
    • Prof Pat Utomi ( founder of Centre for Value in Leadership (CVL) / Prof at Lagos Business School)

Other highlights of the two day event include:

    • Debates and panel discussions, covering topics such as the role of women in Biafra, child refugees, media representation of the war,Biafra and Britain and more
    • A video address from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on Legacies of Biafra
    • Interactive oral history recordings; hear from those affected by the war in their own words.
    • Film Screenings and performance pieces, including an adaption of the Anton Chekhov play Three Sisters, set in Biafra, written by prominent playwright Inua Elams
    • Lunch and refreshments
    • And more

This will be a comprehensive, thought provoking, interesting and educational 360 degree look at the war and its impact in the last 50 years.

If you have even a passing interest int the human condition, the politics of war, human rights etc then this is the conference for you. The war may have taken place in Nigeria, but its impact was felt globally, and this will be reflected in the audience. We look forward to welcoming you.
