Description
As religious and cultural outsiders, the experience of the Irish in London was often marked by hardship and challenges. Their ability to survive, and even prosper, is due in large part to tenacity and the need to band together.
Beginning in the late medieval period, these talks will focus on the various roles played by the Irish in London society and politics.
Famous and infamous historical characters will be discussed, such as Granuaile "the pirate queen" and Colonel Thomas Blood, who attempted to steal the crown jewels. Larger events happening in Britain and Ireland through the centuries will be discussed with a strong focus on their relevance to the London Irish.
- Lecture 1: Medieval/Tudor Period (Mar 2nd 7pm)
