MIKE THORNTON
Fresh from the USA, jazz vocalist Mike Thornton makes his UK debut 19th July at Hampstead Jazz Club, bringing his old-school/ high-energy showmanship to London. “Thornton shows his deep love for fun-loving Swing, soulful ballad interpretations and up-tempo romps with a clear, baritone voice and vibrant expression.”
Mike Thornton blends traditional classic jazz standards with a passion for performing works by live, contemporary composers. Mike is following the footsteps of giants of vocal jazz by interpreting a new generation of jazz artists. Performing on stages across the U.S. over his career, Mike has dedicated his life to being an ever-evolving musician.
HJC marks not only Mike's UK debut, but also debuts songs from his new album, "Homeward".
"I've been a performer all my life. As a jazz singer, the energy I bring to the room comes from many different places: My love for a classic jazz standard, my interpretation of a forgotten song, the electricity that the band and I feel when we're in the pocket, the changing of tonalities within a ballad - from whisper to triple forte; or it might be a scathing dialogue between my scat and a player. It's all part of the evening. And it's never the same one night to the next."
“….he sets off fireworks that color the sky with bright colors.” - Jim Santella, Cadence Magazine
“In the jazz-pop spectrum, he fits somewhere between Mark Murphy and Steve Tyrell — not bad company.” - Mike Joyce, Washington Post
“He’s unique. Twisting each vowel and consonant into a series of related musical tones, he gathers the best of both worlds: the dexterity of an instrumentalist and the lyrical passion of a singer.”
“Thornton certainly has no problem evoking finger-snapping nonchalance, as evidenced by ‘I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter’ …. And Thornton celebrates the genius of vocalese great Jon Hendricks, via a scat-laced ‘Joy Spring,’ with similar ease. A classic pop-to-bop transformation (‘How High the Moon/ Ornithology’), a tart Ellington-inspired excursion (‘Caravan’) and some hushed boomer balladry (Lennon and McCartney’s ‘And I Love Her’) help round out the program and underscore Thornton’s winning versatility.” - Mike Joyce, Washington Post
