The challenges of kidney care in resource poor nations are numerous and multi-factorial. Barriers include political, financial, social including awareness and compliance with treatment, and infrastructural including availability of treatment including facilities to treat end stage renal failure (ESRF) including dialysis/transplant.
KiCKeD's ultimate goal is to make chronic kidney disease (CKD) beatable with a particular focus in Sierra Leone, but with the potential to have more widespread benefit. The burden of kidney disease including CKD in Sierra Leone is unknown as incidence/prevalence records are not kept. However even with an estimated conservative guess it is likely to be “high” and about 10-15% of those affected in Sierra Leone are children (Dr Soccoh Kabia, Awoko online 2016).
“Many people in the country [Sierra Leone] are not aware of kidney disease....people don’t take it seriously although it is one of the biggest killers. Kidney disease is inevitably fatal if it continues unabated without any treatment or any change in lifestyle of people” (Dr Soccoh Kabia, Awoko online 2016).
Even with the "good quality lives" of people in the West, Afro-Caribbeans/African-Americans (ACAA) are 2- 3 times more likely to develop CKD compared to their Caucasian counterparts. Two major CKD risk factors are hypertension and diabetes, which are also highly prevalent in ACAAs.
KiCKeD’s Aims:
To improve kidney care in Sierra Leone and amongst Sierra Leoneans in the Diaspora (SLD).
KiCKeD's Objectives:
1 Improve awareness of CKD in Sierra Leone and amongst SLDs.
2 Educating the public about risks/lifestyle factors that can lead to and prevent CKD.
3 Provide strategically located satellite clinics in Sierra Leone, solely run by KiCKeD or with established groups, initially on an ad-hoc basis offer screening for key CKD risk factors.
4 Facilitate availability of affordable therapeutic interventions by willing healthcare providers/drug companies/NGOs for managing CKD and its risk factors in Sierra Leone and in SLDs.
5 Positively engage the Chief Medical Officer and/or Minister of Health and Sanitation in Sierra Leone
