Description
Kennington Talkies begins a season of films starring George Arliss with The Man Who Played God (1932), directed by John G. Adolfi and co-starring Bette Davis, Violet Heming and Hedda Hopper.
This pre-Code drama is a remake of a silent 1922 film, also starring George Arliss, and based on the 1914 play The Silent Voice by Jules Eckert Goodman, who adapted it from a story by Gouverneur Morris. The film is also known as The Silent Voice, and a later version of the story, Sincerely Yours (1955), starred Liberace.
Arliss plays concert pianist Montgomery Royle, who loses his hearing in a bomb blast. Initially embittered by his deafness, he eventually finds redemption in helping others. Bette Davis, in an early role in her career, plays his much younger fiancée.
