Mar 20 2019 19:30 - 22:00

Kennington Noir presents The Prowler (1951), directed by Joe Losey, and starring Van Heflin, Evelyn Keyes and John Maxwell.

Californian housewife Susan Gilvray (Evelyn Keyes) finds a prowler outside her house late one night and she calls the police. Officer Webb Garwood (Van Heflin) and his partner “Bud” Crocker (John Maxwell) answer the call but do not find anyone. Later, Webb returns to Susan’s house with the pretext of checking if everything is OK. Susan invites him in to have coffee with her and reveals she’s married to a local radio personality (voiced by the film’s uncredited writer Dalton Trumbo) who’s at least twice her age. It doesn’t take long for her to fall for Heflin and they soon start a love affair. When her husband becomes suspicious, Susan ends her relationship with Webb, and he stays away from Susan, although without her knowledge he plots a scheme to get rid of her husband, and then …….

Joe Losey made this noir, with some quite racy content for 1951, in America before moving to Europe in 1953 to avoid the HUAC witch hunts.
