    Description

    EVENT OVERVIEW

This event forms part of the #TimeforUnrest global campaign and call to action. #TimeforUnrest calls upon those who are able from the ME/CFS community and its supporters to host local community screenings of the Sundance award-winning documentary, Unrest, with a view to raising awareness of this desperately misunderstood disease which affects upwards of 250,000 people in the UK alone.

Unrest world-premiered in January at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, where it won a Special Jury Prize for editing. It has since screened at SxSW, CPH:DOX, HotDocs, River Run (Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature), the Nashville Film Festival (Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature), and at Sheffield Doc/Fest, where it won the Wellcome Trust’s Illuminate Award for "vibrant and innovative filmmaking inspired by scientific understanding." Unrest also has a companion virtual reality piece, which premiered at Tribeca and won the Jury Award for best VR at Sheffield/DocFest.

Unrest centres around twenty-eight year-old Jennifer Brea who is working on her PhD at Harvard and months away from marrying the love of her life when she gets a mysterious fever that leaves her bedridden and looking for answers. Disbelieved by doctors yet determined to live, she turns her camera on herself. Through Jennifer Brea’s courageous commitment to this project, this remarkable film takes us on a journey behind closed doors into a world barely seen by anyone but patients and their immediate caregivers. It is a challenging and necessary portrayal of relationships, emotion, politics, the painful and exhausting fight to be heard by those with the keys to its resolution, and the strength of otherwise forgotten human spirits connected by the power of digital networks.

Invisible illnesses and disabilities are all around us; in our friendship groups, families, work places and communities. We must do better in our compassion, in our education and in altering the direction of this conversation.

I invite you to join us to learn a little bit more about a world you may not have seen before, followed by a Q&A where we will have chance to explore some of the themes of the film.

Watch the official trailer here. And if you’d like to hear Jennifer Brea talking about the film, check out her recent interview with Francine Stock on BBC Radio 4’s Film Programme from 28th September 2017.

    EVENT DETAILS

As well as the screening and the Q&A we will have a raffle you can take part in with lots of health and wellness themed prizes to be won, including but not limited to, a lifetime subscription to Headspace, a signed Deliciously Ella cook book, flowers, London based relaxation and fitness classes, £200 worth of Juice phone accessories to stay connected and of course bubbles.

There will also be a cash bar with drinks and snacks available to settle you into a Thursday evening winter movie night.

Proceeds from all sales will be split between the Director’s own charity #MEAction and The Optimum Health Clinic Foundation, a specialist ME/CFS treatment and research charity within our local community here in North London, who are very close to my heart, having supported me throughout my own ME/CFS journey.
