Joe Marsh is a retired chartered accountant, but the theatre organ has been his lifetime’s vocation invaried roles as player, composer, technician, archivist and researcher.
He was the resident organist at the Compton theatre pipe organ in the Odeon / Black’s Regal Theatre, Byker, from 1963 to 1969. In the 1960s and 1970s he appeared regularly as organist at the Odeon / Paramount and Essoldo Theatres, Newcastle upon Tyne, and was relief organist at the Odeon / Black’s Regal Theatre, Gateshead.
Since then, his reputation as performer, recording artist and broadcaster, not least on the BBC Radio 2 series ‘The Organist Entertains’, has extended beyond the United Kingdom to the USA. There have also been appearances on Holland’s Radio Hilversum and on a number of Australian radio stations.
Joe was also part of the NETOA team that removed the Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ from the New Victoria/Gaumont Theatre, Bradford, in 1968 and was deeply involved in the redesign, refurbishment and rebuilding of the instrument in its present home, the New Victoria Centre, Howden-le-Wear.
Fittingly, many of his marches, piano novelties, waltzes, ballads and descriptive pieces have been heard on that mighty Wurlitzer, as well as his scores for several silent films, which have been screened Europe-wide, and many times on satellite television.
