James Brown Is Annie

Purveyors of full-fat, calorie-laden, whipped up jazz, funk 'n' soul, James Brown Is Annie met in a piano bar, rehearse next to a sex shop, and take their name from an Eddie Murphy Saturday Night Live sketch.

Based in Edinburgh, the Scottish sextet's two albums (JBiA I and JBiA II) were produced by original Average White Band members Molly Duncan (2015) and Hamish Stuart (2018) - debut single, Get Up To Get Down, a BBC Radio Scotland 'Single Of The Week'.

With half-a-dozen appearances on Scottish television to their credit, the outfit have shared the stage with artists, such as Average White Band, The Family Stone, Brand New Heavies, The Headhunters, Little Feat, etc.

Renowned for their tight, dynamic, groove-laden live shows, the Scottish sextet regularly sell-out shows across the country; adaptable to playing festivals, seated jazz clubs, and sweaty nightclubs alike.

Having originally met in a piano bar, they rehearse next to a sex shop, and take their moniker from an Eddie Murphy Saturday Night Live sketch. They are not a James Brown tribute band.

The group's two albums were produced by original Average White Band members, Molly Duncan (JBiA I) and Hamish Stuart (JBiA II); their debut single, Get Up To Get Down, a BBC Radio Scotland 'Single Of The Week'. AWB frontmen, Alan Gorrie and Hamish Stuart were so impressed by JBiA, they each penned a song exclusively for the band -  Gorrie's Ask Your Doctor, and Stuart's Sadcastles, featured on both albums, respectively.

One of few artists to have headlined two separate stages at the Internationally-renowned Edinburgh Hogmanay Street Party - performing to over 80,000 people - JBiA have appeared on Scottish national television half-a-dozen times, and have shared the stage with many international recording artists, such as: Average White Band, Little Feat, The Family Stone, The Brand New Heavies, The Headhunters, The Blockheads, Electric Six, Spin Doctors, etc., etc.

Referred to as "Extremely funky" by Jazz FM, and a "perfect example of just how much fun funk can be" by The Scotsman, BBC Radio Scotland heralded JBiA as "one of Scotland's top bands", whereas The Herald insisted the group are "proof that Scotland has the funk."

JBiA's last three shows in London were all sell-out gigs - hopefully their next, at the Hampstead Jazz Club, will be another. What to expect, then? Well, in the words of The Times' David Sinclair, you can expect... "the funk, the whole funk, and nothing but the funk."
