Description

This two-day course is aimed at beginners with an interest in exploring the fascinating Kingdom of Fungi and learning the best approaches to field identification.

Through investigating the biology, ecology and diversity of these organisms, participants will develop an understanding of the fundamental importance of fungi to all life on Earth and the wonderfully strange relationships they form with other fungi, plants and animals.

From this foundation we will focus on developing field identification skills and learning the terminology necessary to distinguish and describe different forms of fungi and their anatomy. The second day of the course will focus on common genera, using keys, field chemical tests and demonstrating the use of microscopes to identify specimens to species level.

Subjects covered:

  • Biology, ecology and diversity of Fungi
  • Terminology of features and skills for identification
  • Common genera and how to seperate them
  • Spore prints, colours and viewing spores through a microscope
  • Using field keys
  • Field trip to a local site of interest
  • Specimen collecting and storage techniques
  • Introduction to key literature and ID guides

This course is open to anyone with an interest in fungi and is suitable for total beginners, through to those who have some experience but would like to learn better techniques. It will be taught by mycologist Rich Wright (Previously at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Avon Wildlife Trust), who has been studying and working in various aspects of mycology for 20 years, with 10 years teaching experience. His passion for fungi and enthusiasm for engaging others in the exploration of the natural world is infectious, informative and enlivening.
