Join internationally renowned light artist Aphra Shemza and programmer Jamie Howard this October for their Interactive Light Art Workshop. The team will provide a hands-on two-day workshop where participants will learn how to create a sound-reactive light sculpture.

Not only will each participant walk away with a stunning interactive sculpture, they will also develop invaluable skills in the following areas; soldering, basic micro-electronics, prototyping on a breadboard, testing components, circuit integration, Arduino and Arduino programming in C++.

Although no prior knowledge about electronics or Arduino is required participants must be over 18, have manual dexterity and competent computer literacy. This workshop is challenging but rewarding. It will start from the basics and leave participants with the skills and confidence to integrate electronics into their projects in the future.

Materials above including soldering irons and wire cutters etc… will be provided however participants must bring a laptop with them.

Program:

Day One, 10am-1pm:

• Introduction to Arduino
• Introduction to soldering and best practice
• Practical soldering tasks
• Introduction to programming in C++
• Code: Constants, variables and the Blink program

1-2pm: Break

2pm-5pm:

• Introduction to your circuit for today; resistors, capacitors, LEDs, breadboard and microphone.
• Practical circuit building on a breadboard
• Testing your components
• Code: Programming conditional statements, input and output
• Code: Processing sound using code
• Code: What is a library, downloading and using a library

Day Two, 10am-1pm:

• Introduction of the PCB
• Introduction of the external power supplies
• Practical soldering tasks

1-2pm: Break

2pm-5pm:

• Testing your circuit
• Circuit integration
• Code: Creating and using functions to expand your program
• Code: Learn how to change parameters and variables in the code to affect the outcomes and make your module unique
• Code: Finalising and debugging your code
