Join us at an invite only event with Malene Hegenberger the inventor of The Hegenberger Speculum - a suturing tool that is revolutionising the way we suture - featured on CNN and winner of Danish Deign Awards and finalist of The Index Awards. Suturing tools have been long-neglected in maternity. The last suturing device was invited over 150 years ago and is rarely used today, leaving us midwives and doctors to use our hands, metal retractors and assistance to hold back vaginal wall and tissue to visualise and repair trauma. Handling and manually holding back damaged, bleeding tissue is often uncomfortable and can be difficult for both women and midwives. Malene Hegenberger consistently questioned why this procedure hadn’t been improved and decided to do something about it. Like many others, she started out with some simple materials and idea at her kitchen table back in 2015, which four years later turned into the Hegenberger Speculum.
The silicone speculum stays expanded while inserted so you can visualise clearly whilst using both hands to suture, allowing us to perform the procedure without an assistant and simplifying the process.
Malene explains; how to get and develop an idea within midwifery, how to position a woman before suturing and why this matters, how to use the Hegenberger Speculum and importance of optimising training – for future midwives and future women in our care.
