Welcome to an enthralling exploration of Horror Theatre! In this lecture, we'll journey through the chilling landscape of stage productions designed to elicit fear, suspense, and unease. We'll begin with the introduction of violence onstage in ancient Roman theatre and Shakespeare’s use of the supernatural. Then we’ll uncover the legacy of Grand Guignol, notorious for its shocking, blood-soaked spectacles. Examining the use of the grotesque onstage in British “In Yer Face Theatre,” we will look into the realities of audiences’ capacity for murder, torture, and sexual assault onstage. We'll discuss how theatre's power lies in bringing audiences face-to-face with the monstrous and the bizarre. What sets horror theatre apart is the visceral experience—being in the same room as the monster, feeling its breath, and shuddering in its presence. We will even hit the success of horror musicals that use melody and comedy to delve into the twisted and macabre. Furthermore, we'll explore the technical wizardry employed—lighting, sound, special effects, and set design—to immerse audiences into a nightmarish realm. Join us for a deep dive into the art of terrifying audiences and the craft behind making the unimaginable feel frighteningly real.
