HJC Presents Paul Ryan & Jamie Safir

Paul and Jamie’s last show at Hampstead was a sell-out, so early booking is advised for this “up close and personal” collection of jazz-inflected standards.

PAUL RYAN, a favourite vocalist of the late jazz critic Jack Massarik, returns to Hampstead Jazz Club to join pianist JAMIE SAFIR to draw inspiration from the historic collaboration between Tony Bennett and Bill Evans, for an intimate evening of selections from the Great American Songbook – this time with a seasonal twist.

PAUL RYAN

Paul’s relaxed style evokes the golden age of the great crooners but his rich baritone is very much his own. As a seasoned and highly respected vocalist, Paul has performed at some of London's most prestigious venues which includes: Ronnie Scott’s, the Hippodrome Casino, the Crazy Coqs, Pizza Express Soho and the Pheasantry.

An evening with Paul Ryan is a rare treat. He has the sublime gift of putting an audience at their ease. His songs are well-chosen, his delivery is a delight. Everything is guaranteed to make you feel better.” – SIR MICHAEL PALIN

Ryan sings with a knowledge and understanding of the nuances and wit of the great lyricists…each song a narrative…personal and poignant, opening up a thousand memories.” – JAZZWISE

Ryan’s relaxed delivery (was) complemented by Safir’s reflective and melodic piano…notes falling like cascades of raindrops, or tears, before an emphatic statement led back to the melody…the encore was a masterpiece of beauty and timing showing the empathy between the two performers.” -   JAZZ JOURNAL

JAMIE SAFIR

Jamie is one of the most talented young pianists to emerge in recent years and his extreme versatility has led him to work not only with such jazz legends as Ian Shaw, Barb Jungr and Elaine Delmar but also with Will Young, Olly Murs and the Brand New Heavies among many others.

He was a keyboardist in the hit 2017 musical Bat Out Of Hell and is currently Musical Director for Patti Boulaye and working on ‘The Sweetest Sounds of Rogers and Hart’ featuring Claire Moore & Robert Meadmore.

Safir plays with wonderful judgment, delicacy and alertness’ London Jazz News ‘The star of the show and the binding force behind the entire set was Jamie Safir. Not only a pianist at the start of a hugely promising career, but a musical arranger of true talent.’ - Musical Theatre Review
