Description
As we continue to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ History Month theme of medicine, Julian Durlacher talks about Patient Zero, Stephen Harts talks learning to live with HIV and Phil Samba gives us the Prep facts.
In essential queer history, Julian Durlacher introduces us to the story of Gaëtan Dugas, a French-Canadian flight attendant who was dubbed “patient zero” and (ludicrously) blamed for bringing HIV to the United States, and only had his name cleared in 2016! Fascinating, frustrating queer history information.
Stephen Hart tells his story of the search for his biological family, identifying as a gay man, surviving rape and learning to live with HIV. His story is compelling joyful, funny, and full of hope. He wrote a play called Shadowed Dreamer, a story of his life, inviting people to “dream beyond” the challenges they face in their own lives. Shadowed Dreamer was first performed in New York in 2009. Tonight Stephen will tell us his story and about the writing of the play and its recent developments.
London based PrEP user Phil Samba, a social and HIV prevention activist, talks about how current trials and pilots are failing to engage with some key populations. Black men are often stereotyped to be a certain type which can determine reactions to gay black men in the community. He willl discuss the feelings, thoughts and experiences of this lives experience.
