Description

Join us for a FREE, bespoke screening of a stunning new Dominican film, Sugar Island (2024). For nearly four centuries, the plantation system served as the economic axis of the Sugar Islands, marked by enslavement, and various forms of labour exploitation that have shaped societies and imprinted themselves on cultural expressions.

When Makenya, a Dominican teen discovers she is pregnant, it throws her community's history of marginalisation into sharp relief. Her grandfather is a prominent pensions rights activist in a town encased by sugarcane fields, and Makenya’s transition into adulthood extends beyond the physical changes brought about by motherhood: it encompasses profound political and spiritual awakening as she comes to terms with her identity within her context. Her search for freedom is guided by the immaterial and spiritual realms, as well as a confrontation with history itself.

Sugar Island is our first screening of a Caribbean feature. Much like famed Caribbean landscapes, through Makenya's coming of age story, the film makes a sophisticated yet visually breathtaking case for reckoning with history as necessary for experiencing freedom in the present.

Currently touring the film festival circuit, join us for a very special screening of Sugar Island (2024). This is not to be missed.

Come for the film, stay for the conversation.
