    Description

Two friends, one war. They will both survive, but can their friendship?

    FREE entry, registration is essential.

Join us for the March edition of History on Film: a free screening of the multiple award-winning film Flame (1996) which explores the lives of childhood friends Florence and Nyasha who become the freedom fighters Flame and Liberty. Following their journey to armed resistance, their experiences as guerilla women, and the kind of lives they can re-make in the new Zimbabwe, are among the themes explored in this compelling, nuanced picture of the before and after of a revolutionary life.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with A S Francis and Althea Rivas. A S Francis is author of the new book Gerlin Bean: Mother of the Movement. Gerlin Bean, originally from Jamaica, was a leading Black British Feminist activist who later moved to independent Zimbabwe. Althea Rivas convenes the MSc in Humanitarianism, Aid and Conflict at SOAS. Her teaching and research explores the politics of development, conflict, humanitarian intervention and peace through the lens of the everyday, and is currently focused on the racialised and gendered nature of processes of aid, post-conflict reconstruction and social justice.

History on Film is a monthly film screening run by the history department at Goldsmiths. Join us on the first Wednesday evening of every month for great films from and/or about historical moments, expert panelists, and lively discussions accompanied by free popcorn.
