Description
Ralph Hooper joined Hawker Aircraft in Kingston in 1948. By 1957 he was working on supersonic fighter designs but started exploring uses for a proposed Bristol fan jet engine. He convinced them to develop it much further to have the four swivelling nozzles needed for his concept for the simplest possible vertical take off and landing fighter. From 1961 prototypes proved that his design was practical. The result was the Hawker Harrier “jump jet” which entered service in 1969. Over 800 Harriers were built keeping the Hawker factory in Kingston busy into the 1990s.
From 1968 as a Director and Chief Engineer, Hooper also oversaw and influenced the design of the Hawk advanced jet trainer of which 1,000 have been built. The latest versions of Harriers and Hawks are still in service around the world to this day.
