Description

Handmade Book Workshop

The 'Next Chapter' following on from our very successful Books and Zines Project, in 2025 DI are offering you a chance to make various types of handmade books.

A comprehensive DI Workshop series comprising three-sessions on bookmaking and photo book creation, led by photographers Alex Hare and Lizzie Shepherd. You will learn how to create personalised, creative photo books with hands-on techniques and professional insights.

After each session there will be follow up Q & A when you can ask questions, and seek assistance with any challenges you faced during making your books.

Session 1

Book covers and concertinas We will learn about the various papers, boards and options for covering a book (including our own photos!), discover the tools for making books and see a cover being created. We will also learn about paper, techniques for folding and cutting, issues specific to photo books and see a concertina book block being created and attached to the covers for a complete book people can then produce themselves.

Tutor: Alex Hare.

Session 2

This session will focus on creative design for interesting hand made books that captivate the viewer and make your books unique extensions of your photographic style and content. We will see how to combine different covers with different book blocks and how we can adapt the pages for innovative ways to engage the viewer. We will learn about the art and methods for sequencing and see how a book page layout can be created in Affinity for different types of book block and book design, including the addition of text and captions for that truly polished finish.

Tutor: Alex Hare.

Session 3

Lay flat book blocks, advanced cover designs and printing pages for books via Lightroom. We will see how a lay flat book block is measured, cut and produced together with a demonstration of printing various book blocks via specially adapted tools and functionality within Lightroom.
