Casting the Runes + The Residence at Whitminster
Robert Lloyd Parry performs two classic ghost stories by M. R. James

Larmer Tree Gardens - Victorian Jubilee Hall, Tollard Royal, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP5 5PY

We are delighted to welcome back the magnificent Robert Lloyd Parry as M. R. James, the master of the English ghost story, performing two more tales in the magical setting of the Victorian Jubilee Hall, Larmer Tree Gardens.

Every Christmas, M. R. James would write and perform new tales to entertain friends in his rooms in King’s College, Cambridge. A century later, these still have a special power to terrify and amuse. Robert Lloyd Parry recreates James’ entertainments in a truly atmospheric way, illuminated by candlelight and underscored by dread.

In Casting the Runes we meet the unforgettable ‘Abbot of Lufford’, Mr Karswell: magic lanternist, historian of the occult and scourge of the academic establishment. The story is perhaps best known for being the source for the classic 1950s horror film Night of the Demon. It is partnered here by one of James’ most neglected masterpieces, The Residence at Whitminster, in which a dark shadow is cast over the precinct of a peaceful English Church . . .

'This is story-telling at its finest . . . A gloriously ghostly and chilling winter treat.' THE STAGE

On Christmas Day 2013, Robert Lloyd Parry appeared on television portraying M. R. James in Mark Gatiss' BBC Two documentary, M. R. James: Ghost Writer.

From the preface to Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, 1904:
'If any of my stories succeed in causing their readers to feel pleasantly uncomfortable when walking along a solitary road at nightfall, or sitting over a dying fire in the small hours, my purpose in writing them will have been attained.'
