FYI A Little Loaf: Sourdough Bread-Making Workshop

From GBP 15.00

Location

Date

May 14 2017 13:00 - 15:00

Description

A Little Loaf is a jam-packed, lunchtime bread-making class suitable for beginners with a busy schedule who want to learn about bread-making from scratch or for people who dabble in baking and would like to know more about sourdoughs and flours.

In this FYI The House Party workshop, join Julia Georgallis of The Bread Companion @thebreadcompanion to learn:

- Ingredients and proportions – the baker’s percent, the science behind the ingredients
- Yeasts! Sourdough, packet and fresh yeasts, plus how to make your own starter – what is sourdough, why does everyone keep banging on about it and what difference does yeast make?
- Different flours – let’s talk about gluten (it’s a misunderstood thing)
- Stretching and folding, proving and shaping

You will be taught Julia's basic sourdough recipe and will take home bread dough and enriched dough to bake at home, plus your very own sourdough starter.

About Julia Georgallis

Julia is a Londoner with a weakness for baked goods. She studied as a product, furniture and industrial designer at Kingston University, Politecnico di Milano and the Royal College of Art and worked in the design industry for four years. Three years ago, she swapped her design job for an apron and learnt how to bake bread, setting up nomadic bakery The Bread Companion, which aims to encourage people to eat, buy and bake their own bread. She has run a great many workshops all over the place, from Stroud to Sweden, council estates to glampsites. As well as running The Bread Companion, she works as a baker at social enterprise Better Health Bakery in East London, still dabbles occasionally in design and is studying for a qualification in Nutrition.
