    Description

This 3-night residential course is aimed at those that have developed their fungal field skills and wish to get to grips with the microscopic identification of these fascinating organisms.

The course is made up of 3 core taught days, each focusing on one of the major groups of fungi and the techniques for examination that are particular to it. This will be followed by an afternoon field trip each day, and an evening of group practical activities on the microscopes to practice what has been learnt, providing time to help with any difficulties and work through more specimens. There will also be additional talks on conservation and other aspects of mycology during the event.

Set in the heart of the Mendip Hills, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the course will be based in the Charterhouse outdoor study centre. Many of the sites we will visit are within walking distance, allowing participants to fully immerse in the subject.

The onsite accommodation provided is in simple and clean dormitories with bunk beds. The indoor and outdoor classrooms, along with the kitchen are very close. All the facilities have disabled access; however, the field trips will often be over more difficult terrain.

A simple breakfast and lunch followed by a cooked dinner will be provided every day and will cater for all eating requirements. Accommodation and food are included in the course price.

Taught by Dr Brian Douglas (Lost and Found Fungi Project), Rich Wright (Forever Fungi, previously at Kew) and Emma Williams (Glamorgan Fungus Group), the course will be information packed and well supported by tutors with many years’ experience and a big passion for the subject.

This course is kindly supported by The Lost and Found Fungi Project (Kew) and The Justin Smith Foundation. The course will be running not for profit to ensure low costs to increase accessibility and support learners of all ages in their exploration of this fascinating Kingdom.

This course is aimed at beginners and more advanced learners, but some experience of field identification will be needed. Those that have attended previous ID courses will find this course flows on well as a next step. For those with more experience, time with tutors, literature, equipment and the diversity in the Mendips will provide a valuable learning experience. Microscopes are provided.

T&Cs: Ticket price includes food and accommodation. Refunds will only be available up until 7th February 2019 and will not include the Billetto booking fee (approximately £12).
