Description

Frontline Fashion - 15th September 4-6 pm

Screening followed by Q & A

Have you ever wondered what it’s like for designers working on the frontline to make our clothes more sustainable? Frontline Fashion is a documentary following 10 talented Asian and European emerging fashion designers determined to change the future of fashion - currently one of the most polluting industries - for the better in the world’s biggest sustainable fashion design competition, The EcoChic Design Award.

As they descend into Hong Kong for the design battle of their lives, all eyes are on the first prize; to design an up-cycled collection for China’s leading luxury brand, Shanghai Tang. But before they meet the region’s fashion elite on the Hong Kong Fashion Week runway, the designers must prove they have what it takes to transform the industry’s polluting ways by tackling waste at a discarded clothing warehouse and going behind the scenes at one of the biggest shirt manufacturers in the world. As the 10 designers vie for the winning position, they prove that when it comes sustainable fashion, there is no need for a compromise in style. But there can only be one winner…

Orsola de Castro, Fashion Designer, Co-founder of Estethica and Co-founder of Fashion Revolution

Orsola de Castro is a renowned fashion designer and campaigner from the UK. She founded the luxury up-cycling label, From Somewhere in 1997 and has since created up-cycled collections for the niche and mass markets, including Speedo, Tesco and Topshop. She co-founded Estethica, the international showcasing platform for sustainable brands, at London Fashion Week in 2006 with her partner Filippo Ricci and Anna Orsini from the British Fashion Council. In 2013, she co-founded Fashion Revolution, the global coalition of academics, designers, organisations and key opinion formers who are demanding increased transparency in the fashion value chain. Orsola has been an international judge of The EcoChic Design Award since its inception in 2011.

Annie Mackinnon, The EcoChic Design Award 2015/16 Finalist

Annie is currently studying Fashion Design Womenswear at Central Saint Martins in the UK. She has previously interned for Claire Barrow and The Autonomous Collections.
For her The EcoChic Design Award 2015/16 collection, Annie was inspired by Matisse’s cutout technique and applied the process by reintegrating scraps from luxury garments into her collection through collage. She combined the zero-waste and up-cycling design techniques using secondhand and end-of-roll textiles, which she sourced from textile stores, markets and charity shops in the UK.
