‘A vibrant slice of hemisphere-straddling maximalist pop’
Yama Warashi is the project of Yoshino Shigihara, a Japanese musician and artist whose past projects include the Maloya-influenced raucous psychedelia collective Zun Zun Egui (of which she was a co-founder). Inspired by Japanese folk dance, free jazz and tribal African music, and heavily saturated in psychedelia, Yama Warashi’s songs are lyrically outlandish and charming, melodically addictive and mythical; the band name translates from Yoshino's native tongue as “small childlike mountain spirit”.
Jemima Thewes & Tim Lane create an enveloping and deeply textured fusion of dark songs and bright, deep rhythms. It's roots are inspired by the folk ballad tradition and layered with grit, tenderness, mischief, humour and wisdom. These cloud-hopping tales are told by warm, powerful vocals and carried on a bed of heavy, playful percussion and strings. Their lyrics and melodies creep up and catch you unaware and their beats that get you moving in spirit and body. The effect of this music stays with you long after you have heard it.
