Deep Pope is a new project bringing together Steve Lewis of Deep Cabaret from the North West and our very own bass legend John Pope. These two musicians have admired each other’s music making since first meet in 2015 but this will be the first time they’ve ever played together live.

Steve has always wanted to make a songwriting project with John’s rich and dexterous double bass in it. John has always been a big fan of the approach to repertoire Steve has crafted through Deep Cabaret. As a musician always motivated by the challenge of working with new players, and relishing the space afforded by the duo context he readily signed up when Steve put the idea to him.

They will playing a brand new mix of ‘Asemic’ songs (songs with no semantic content) pieces about lichen, moss, alveoli and ancestral mathematics direct from the writings of Robin Wall Kimmerer, Merlin Sheldrake, Barry Lopez and other luminaries of deep ecology.

When they offered us the chance to premiere Deep Pope as a token of their appreciation for the nurturing support Cobalt has offered them in the past, we jumped. We’re sure that their very particular areas of overlapping interests (Eric Dolphy, Scott Walker and Tinawarien) offer a special adventure any curious audience will enjoy.

Powerful Tyneside bassist John Pope and mercurial virtuoso violinist John Garner return with their no holds barred music-making. Both internationally renowned improvisers, the duo have immersed themselves in the singular repertoire of composers including Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Garrison, Jeanne Lee, Mary Lou Williams, and Misha Mengelberg, channeling these titanic spirits through the lens of their contemporary experience in myriad musical traditions. Spontaneous, transitory and ecstatic, the pair will plunge headlong into a thrilling and, at times, terrifying world of sounds and colours.
