In Fire at Sea, Rosi creates a powerful portrait of the small Sicilian island of Lampedusa, the first destination for hundreds of thousands of African and Middle Eastern Refugees making the perilous journey to Europe. Rosi explores the jarring contrast between the quiet local life of the Lampedusan people and the profoundly tragic events that surround them and resonate across global politics.
Winner of the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival and The European Film Award for Best Documentary (Prix Arte) in 2016.
Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian) - 'Fire at Sea is masterly film-making'
A.O.Scott (NYTimes) - 'Rosi takes a hard, empathetic look at reality, which contains wonders as well as horrors. He doesn’t bear witness — an overused and often presumptuous idea. He observes, with humility and precision.'
Anna Diamond (The Atlantic) - 'a powerful, and beautifully shot, look at the migrant crisis—one that manages to subvert viewer expectations of what has become for many a familiar news subject'
Contra Journal is a not-for profit publication that explores the relationship between art and conflict. Each thematic edition will focus on different interactions between society affected by conflict and visual culture.
