Description
The Engineering Group of the Geological Society will host its 2020 Annual Conference between 26th and 28th March at Christ’s College Cambridge. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘The role of the engineering geologist in the climate change challenge’ and will bring together practitioners and academics from our industry.
Keynote and lead speakers include:
Jim Gelder (Mott MacDonald), Peter Head, CBE FREng (Arup), Prof. Colin Hills (University of Greenwich), Kevin W Jones (Tetra Tech Canada), Fleur Loveridge (University of Leeds).
Titles for presentations include:
- Peter Head (Arup): Tackling Climate Change Embracing the Role of the Earth's Crust
- Antony Drake (Mott MacDonald): Enhancing the climate resilience of infrastructure for vulnerable small island states in the Caribbean
- Jordan Geear (Atkins) - Ground Model Development for Offshore Wind Farms – How Engineering Geology can add value and help reduce costs
- Chris Power (Mott MacDonald) - Climate change challenges to Highways England’s geotechnical assets: assessing the hazard
- Paul Fish (Jacobs) - Long-term climate change impacts on nuclear waste management, Cumbria
- Phil Renforth (Heriot-Watt University) – Carbon dioxide capture using alkaline wastes
- Roger Moore (University of Sussex) - Forecasting the effects of climate change on a landslide ground behaviour hazard model
The conference will also host a panel presentation consisting of previous Glossop Medal winners.

Continued Professional Development Event
While the conference itself is excellent CPD, we will be hosting a bespoke training session 11:00 – 17:30 on 26th
March before the start of the full conference. Sessions will focus on state-of-the-art approaches that engineers may use to mitigate/adapt to climate change. Instructors include:
- Dr Phil Renforth (Heriot-Watt University) - Methods and monitoring for CO2 capture in alkaline wastes
- Prof. Mike Winter (Winter Associates) - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, Replace: Sustainability in a Material World
- Paul Nowak (Atkins) - Maximising the use of onsite materials
- Asa Soderberg/Stephanie Knowles (Stantec) - Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems
The CPD training can be booked during registration for an additional £100 onto the ticket price (with includes lunch and refreshments).
Field Trip
Following the conference delegates can join us on a short field trip which will depart immediately following the conference and return to Cambridge by 17:00. More details to follow. Tickets can be purchased during registration for an additional £45.

The first thing to do is check your spam/junk filters and inboxes. Your tickets were sent as an attachment and can be thought of as spam by some email services.
