    The Engineering Group of the Geological Society will host its 2025 Annual Conference between Thursday 10th April (6.00pm) and Saturday 12th April 2025 (16.30pm), with an optional full day field trip to North Norfolk on Sunday 13th April, at Christ’s College Cambridge. 

    The 2025 Engineering Group Annual Conference will focus on the key themes of the Engineering Geology of the Energy Transition and will bring together practitioners and academics from our industry. 

    Keynote speakers will be:

    Dr Mark Ireland, Chair of Geological Society Energy Group & Senior Lecturer in Energy Geosciences, Newcastle University - “The Importance of Reproducibility and Reliability for Building Trust in Geosciences for Net Zero”

    Dr Carol Cotterill, Principal Geoscientist, Norwegian Geotechnical Institute - "Complex stratigraphies: examples where Geoscience can help mitigate risk"

    Andy Barwise, Team Lead Site Characterisation, RWE - "Why Engineering Geology matters in building an offshore windfarm"

    David Waring, Lead Geotechnical Engineer, BP - " Geology’s Contribution to Onshore Renewable Energy Projects"

    Professor Susan Gourvenec, Deputy Director of Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute, University of Southampton - "Offshore Geotechnical Challenges of the Energy Transition (and some Solutions)".

    Continued Professional Development Event
    While the conference itself is excellent CPD, we will be hosting a bespoke training session 11:00 – 17:30 on 10th April before the start of the full conference at 18.00. Sessions will focus on state-of-the-art approaches in engineering geology including aspects of groundwater in engineering geology, advanced desk study, earthworks and routes to CGeol.

    The CPD training can be booked during registration for an additional £80 onto the ticket price (with includes lunch and refreshments).


    Field Trip

    The Conference will run an optional full day field trip on the Sunday and will have a Quaternary Engineering Geology focus with a visit to the North Norfolk coast.

    The trip can be booked as part of the conference package with the option of Saturday night B & B, and an in-college dinner in the evening. The trip and will include a packed lunch.  Tickets can be purchased during registration for an additional £190 for the Saturday night room, dinner and breakfast or £95 for the Sunday trip without extra accommodation or meal. Both registrations will include a packed lunch.
