    Description

The roots of racism are in the body. Having grown up in societies governed by white supremacy culture we have been taught to unconsciously (and consciously) reproduce various forms of oppression. Implicit memories, associations and emotions often cause us to react to everyday situations in ways that cause harm to ourselves and others.

Embodiment and movement practises provide a path to awareness of our inner landscape, ensuring that we become able to respond consciously in each moment rather than reacting in ways which perpetuate harm.

This work is very useful for those interested in activism and social change as it allows us to go beyond the rational mind and understand how oppression functions on a somatic level.

This 2 hour workshop will combine mindfulness, embodied free movement and group exercises to get into your body and start processing how white supremacy culture is reproduced in your life.

    Rough Outline:

    → Introductions
    → Mindfulness exercise
    → Facilitated warm up
→ Free movement in relation to key questions
    → Group exercise
    → Pair sharing
    → Cool down
    → Close

Some key questions we will consider:

    1) How does integrity face oppression?
    2) What does decency do in the face of threat?
    3) How can we stand with those who have different lived experiences than our own?
