EFG live is back for 2022 and The Hampstead Jazz Club is a proud supporter of this important musical event every November, bringing you a stellar line-up of events!
The live show of this remarkable release "British Standard Time", a "Jazz FM Album Of The Week" and a celebration of UK songwriters from the 1930s to the present day. The show ranges over the same glorious material with some extra surprises. Vocals are handled by UK reggae legend Carroll Thompson and rising jazz star Freddie Benedict with the Alex Webb Trio and guitarist Jamie McCredie, playing new arrangements of classics by Ray Noble, Noel Coward, George Shearing and John Dankworth, musical hits by Lionel Bart and Tony Newley, and of course contributions from the great British pop writers – Lennon & McCartney, Amy Winehouse and others.
‘Webb has struck gold … Unreservedly recommended’ – Jazz Views
Queen Of Lovers Rock Carroll Thompson and Freddie Bennedict front this swinging tribute to British songwriters past and present, launching the album 'British Standard Time' with Alex Webb (piano), Mikele Montoli (bass) and Sophie Alloway (drums).
'Absolutely brilliant! I have had the privilege to review some good albums this year and this is right up there with the very best’ - Simplyjazztalk.blog
Alex Webb, a resident artist at Hampstead Jazz Club, is a highly experienced songwriter, pianist and arranger working in jazz and music theatre. He has recorded four albums for commercial release: ‘All Or Nothing At All’ by Alexander Stewart (as MD); ‘Call Me Lucky’ as Alex Webb, ‘The Last Bohemians’ with David McAlmont and his most recent. ‘British Standard Time’, a celebration of UK songwriters in new jazz arrangements. His songs have been recorded by Vimala Rowe, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, David McAlmont, Liane Carroll, China Moses, Cherise Adams-Burnett & Jo Harrop among others.
Known the world over as ‘The Queen Of Lovers Rock’, Carroll Thompson burst on the scene in 1980, with a million-selling self-penned debut album. 'Hopelessly In Love' stayed in the UK reggae charts for an amazing and record-breaking two and a half years, much of that time in the Number 1 slot.
Carroll has sung with Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones, Art Blakey, Sting, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Sade and many more – and is now using her remarkable voice in jazz contexts as well as reggae.
Rising jazz vocalist Freddie Benedict has already distinguished himself in the classical field as well as jazz. He is now studying for a master’s degree in jazz singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and as the lead male singer with National Youth Jazz Orchestra, has performed all over the UK, including Ronnie Scott’s.
The New Yorker’s legendary music critic, Whitney Balliett, defined jazz as ‘the sound of surprise,’ which seems to perfectly sum up the music on British Standard Time.
