Description
Socially conscious theatre group Disperse bring to life just how dangerous social media can be in a generation submersed in technology. Their modernised rendition of Dennis Kelly’s hard-hitting dark comedy DNA takes the themes of bullying, intimidation, and abuse and thrusts them into the only place that they are guaranteed to be seen, social media.
Disperse are currently touring their production in schools throughout Hertfordshire and North London, educating teenagers about the dangers of social media and how toxic friendship groups can often just be disguising various forms of bullying. A spokesperson for the group said that “Teenagers are at a vulnerable and critical age and as such may be more likely to engage in or be the victims of bullying than any other age group due to societal pressures. Whilst many young people will often pass off acts of violence or verbal abuse as a joke, that is quite often not the case. We at Disperse believe it is imperative that teenagers are taught how to recognise bullying in their own friendship groups and others around them. In recent years, this has become all the more crucial as social media is often used as an extension of or window to bullying, as it is yet another way to victimise someone.”
The group are also hopeful to exhibit their production in schools later this year during Anti Bullying Week 2017 which runs 4th – 30th November.
The Herts advertiser declares “Disperse’s DNA an entertaining yet hauntingly relevant commentary on the relationship between bullying and social media”.
